Our Wedding

A Slow Burn

Around fifteen years ago, Maddy and Lukas had sparks of friendship in Mr. Strait's yearbook class. Bonded by a love for movies, Maddy spent many hours in Luke's parents' basement, discovering her love for film. Their first movie together was Yorgos Lanthimos's Dogtooth (very on brand). For years, they kept finding their way back to each other: at True/False Film Festival, crashing on each other's couches after concerts, trading movie recommendations and Snapchats across Springfield and Columbia. After college, they landed back home in Kansas City, and Friday nights became a routine of dinner and a movie. Somewhere things started to shift, a real will-they-won't-they (just ask their friends), until Luke asked Maddy to be his date to a wedding and, during a slow dance, asked her to be his girlfriend instead. She made him wait a week, finally saying yes in a bowling alley parking lot. They bowled for hours that night, a first real date, followed by seeing Paul Schrader's The Card Counter. The shift from friends to something more felt easy. They fell for each other over nice dinners, music, and exploring every corner of Kansas City. They said "I love you" for the first time at an outdoor screening of Fire Walk With Me, sitting through the rain because neither wanted to leave before it ended. Through flight school, long distance, hard schedules, surgeries, and stretches of unemployment, they kept showing up for each other. In March 2023, they moved into an apartment in the River Market. First night there, they watched Office Space on a laptop. It became a home filled with music, cooking, crafts, and always, another movie night. In December 2025, in that same living room, Luke got down on one knee. They celebrated at La Fou Frog and came home to watch the best slow burn movie: When Harry Met Sally.
